John leger(accordion and vocals)
- John Leger was born July 20, 1975 in Biloxi, MS. His parents were Amos and Joyce Leger of the Lacassine-Welsh area of Louisiana. When John was five years old, he came across his father's Sidney Brown accordion, while visiting his grandfather, Alva Leger in Welsh. John actually tore it up. His father was somewhat disappointed when he discovered this, but he had it rebuilt by "Professional" brand accordion builder Ervin Lejeune (son the the late Iry Lejeune) in Lake Charles. Later, the accordion made its way back to John-John and his family in Biloxi.
-
- When he was five, his father allowed him to try the accordion again one day and to dad's surprise young John had his first tune put together by that same evening, it was legend Iry Lejeune's "I Made a Big Mistake."
- Later John's family moved back to Lacassine and one day while visiting a grocery store of family friend, Elis Vanicor, Mr. Vanicor invited young John-John to play with a band at the local community center. John's first public performance was "Bayou Pon Pon" another tune made famous by the late Iry Lejeune. John recalls that the packed crowd urged him to stand on a folding table to play so he could be seen, but John-John refused, in the fear that he may fall and break another accordion. He remembers his father talking about the people throwing money on stage during the performance and when all the money was collected totaled about $1200...not bad for his first public performance. John used the money to purchase his own accordion, a Master from maker Charlie Ortego of Lake Charles.
- John, over the years had played with many musicians, such as: Bruce Daigrepont, Paul Daigle and Cajun Gold, Jo-El Sonnier, Johnny Sonnier and Cajun Heritage, Jean Savoie and the Bayou Ramblers, The Cajun Troubadours, Chris Miller, Curtis Coubello, Doug Kershaw, Richard Lebouef, and Conray Fontenot. John became a regular member of Allen Fontenot and the Country Cajuns in May of 1999 until September of 2001.
